I studied at CLU in California, USA, and was also able to travel to Canada and around America during my time abroad. Overall I loved travelling in the US and in Canada. I enjoyed visiting old friends who studied abroad in Australia and I really enjoyed learning about the culture of the US. Furthermore, the sporting culture and the atmosphere at sporting games was quite addictive and I loved every second of that.
I also found the culture of California quite amazing. The cultural diversity where I studied surprised me and was really eye-opening, but I think that made the experience so much more special.
Overall my time studying abroad at CLU was for the most an enjoyable one. Obviously the location being so close to LA was ideal. Especially when the train ride was only an hour into the city from Simi Valley. Furthermore the weather in Southern California was amazing. The climate was not a whole lot different to that of the northern rivers—the only difference being rainfall and humidity. Being so close to LA made it easy to fly to most parts of America for traveling purposes, especially San Francisco.
Classes were also a different but enjoyable experience. Compulsory attendance is obviously a huge change from studying at SCU given most lectures are recorded. The university structure in small universities in America required the student to be actively involved in discussion during class. While it took some time to get accustomed to, the university style became a rewarding learning experience.
