I was a study abroad student from Taiwan and I was really lucky to have the opportunity to work at the One&Only Hayman Island Resort for my six month internship.
One&Only Hayman Island resort is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. I would say I worked in paradise. I worked as a housekeeping attendant. It was a hard task for me, because this was my first housekeeping job and the first time that I had worked in a foreign country. The language barrier was the first problem I came across even though we had practiced and engaged with people in English in the campus. But it is still hard for us to deliver the information clearly and understand others in our first month.
The workplace in One&Only had a diversity of nationalities so they understoo our situation and are patient with us. What's more, all the employees are like a big family on the island. We all suffered from the cyclone Debbie, in March. Most people lost their job, but everyone started to use their own relationships to find more job vacancies from other organisations and provide jobs for us. When people found a job, they recommended the employees from the Hayman Island so others had the opportunity to apply for another job.
If I needed any help I could always ask my colleagues and my supervisors for advice. They told me how I could improve my skills and performance. They never let us down, and our supervisors always cheered us up, and protected us.
I really appreciated having a chance to work with these great people. They taught me a lot and also provided a good placement for us.
